The Missing Factor In Your Bible Study

One of the cardinal functions of a believer is the study of the Word of God, the Bible. Both new converts and matured believers are not excluded from the studying of the Bible.

Apostle Peter speaking to new converts said:

As newborn babes, desire the sincere milk of the word, that ye may grow thereby: – 1 Peter 2:2

Apostle Paul to the Ephesians said:

And now, brethren, I commend you to God, and to the word of his grace, which is able to build you up, and to give you an inheritance among all them which are sanctified. – Acts 20:32

The need for the study of the Bible can never be overemphasized. Anyone who is serious about walking with God must not take Bible study casually. I learnt how important Bible study is when I noticed that my dad never misses his Bible study schedule. He applied diligence to his Bible study life. His fasting programs sees him do Bible study during the day and prayers at night.

In one of my articles, I wrote about how to activate the power of the word where I shared techniques to the effective study of God's word but recently I discovered that you may do all that I listed in that article and you may not be able to activate the power of the word. The missing factor in our Bible study is what I am going to share in this article.

Follow the progression of these Scriptures...

In the beginning God created the heaven and the earth.
And the earth was without form, and void; and darkness was upon the face of the deep. And the SPIRIT OF GOD moved upon the face of the waters.
And God said, Let there be light: and there was light – Genesis 1:1-3

Before God spoke, the Spirit of God was already hovering over the earth. God's word is effective only in the premise of the operations of His Spirit.
It is the hovering Spirit of God that gave His word the expression it got.
I believe you already know what this missing factor is. The Holy Spirit is the missing factor in your Bible study.

Your Bible would be a novel to you except you study it from the perspective of the author. If you want to understand a book for what it truly is you must read the book from the author's perspective. The author of the Bible is God by the Holy Spirit through the faculty of "Holy Men".

All scripture is given by inspiration of God, and is profitable for doctrine, for reproof, for correction, for instruction in righteousness: – 2 Timothy 3:16

For the prophecy came not in old time by the will of man: but holy men of God spake as they were moved by the Holy Ghost. – 2 Peter 1:21

In order to understand the Scriptures and do effective Bible study you must study the Bible from the perspective of the author and to do this you must ask the Holy Spirit to help you.

Jesus was trying to give voice to this fact in John 6:63 when He said:

It is the spirit that quickeneth; the flesh profiteth nothing: the words that I speak unto you, they are spirit, and they are life.

The words He spoke where not an end in themselves. They were spiritual things and to decode them you must be Spirit-guided when you want to study.
Relying on your flesh: your intellects, your brains, your wisdom, your ideas, your philosophy, your brilliance and what have you to study the Bible would never make you understand the message of the Bible.

Who also hath made us able, ministers of the new testament; not of the letter, but of the spirit: for the letter killeth, but the spirit giveth life. – 2 Corinthians 3:6

In the verse above, Apostle Paul reveals that you can study the Bible and instead of living you begin to die. This happens when you study the Bible without the help of the Holy Spirit.

Every Bible study technique you know would never help you achieve effective Bible study if you study the Bible without being led and guided by the Spirit of God.

Don't just jump into Bible study. Pray for the guidance and direction of God's Spirit. Stop relying on your wisdom to study God's word. Study from the perspective of the author, the Holy Spirit.
Pray for His guidance before you start your Bible study applying the study techniques you've learnt.
