"For the word of God is quick, and powerful, and sharper than any two-edged sword, piercing even to the dividing asunder of soul and spirit, and of the joints and marrow, and is a discerner of the thoughts and intents of the heart" – Hebrews 4:12
The scripture above and several other scriptures ascertain that the Word of God is powerful.
Despite having the head knowledge that God's word is powerful and even confessing it once and again, we haven't truly captured any power from our powerful proclamations of the word.
What could be wrong? Is the Word not powerful as it says it is? Were the writers of the Bible just saying when they wrote that the word of God is powerful?
If the word of God truly is powerful, how can we become possessors of this power embedded in the letters of the word? How can we activate the power of the Word of God?
I would be showing you what you don't do which makes the word of non-effect in your life and why the potency of the word isn't a palpable reality in your life.
Come with me;
For this study, my emphasis would be from Joshua 1:8 which says;
"This book of the law shall not depart out of thy mouth; but thou shalt meditate therein day and night, that thou mayest observe to do according to all that is written therein: for then thou shalt make thy way prosperous, and then thou shalt have good success."
From Joshua 1:8 I would point out three ways to activate the power which is resident in God's word.
1. Study The Word
"This book of the law shall not depart out of thy mouth;..
The first means to activate the power of the Word of God is to study the word. You wont be able to activate the power of something you don't know.
You have to give yourself to concise, ardent, and serious study of the Word of God daily.
Apostle Paul admonished Timothy;
"Study to show thyself approved unto God, a workman that needs not to be ashamed but rightly dividing the word of truth"
Your life must be built upon Bible study. I devised a policy which I learnt from Dag Heward-Mills. The policy is dubbed "NBNB" which means "No Bible, No Breakfast". Until I have consumed the Word of God I am not entitled to my breakfast.
The study of the Word of God must be a cardinal theme in your life if you must activate the power which the Word possesses.
Mind you, there's a difference between Bible reading and Bible Study. I am not referring to the religion reading of the Bible but the concise study of the Bible.
Bible reading is good but Bible study is of more benefit. Of course when you study you consult several resources ranging from the person of the Holy Spirit, to Hebrew lexicons (for the old testament), Greek lexicons (for the New testament), commentaries, and concordances.
This is so that you can articulate the very intent of Bible.
It is not in how many chapters you read. It is in how much understanding you get.
Studying the Bible gives you understanding more than religious reading would do.
2. Meditate On The Word
"...but thou shalt meditate therein day and night..." – Joshua 1:8
After studying the Word of God you would need to meditate on it.
To meditate means to contemplate; to keep your mind fixed on something.
The Word of God would be like your notebooks, textbooks and novels if all you do is study it. Having studied the Word, you must meditate on it.
"Blessed is the man that walketh not in the counsel of the ungodly, nor standeth in the way of sinners, nor sitteth in the seat of the scornful.
But his delight is in the law of the LORD; and in his law doth he meditate day and night.
" – Psalms 1:1-2
The Psalmist gives us a definition of a man who can be called blessed. He says in verse 2 that the man who is blessed is that man that meditates on the law of the Lord day and night.
Meditating on God's Word is an emphasis which is lacking in the Body of Christ. Believers just study the Bible and end the process.
When you study, as you go about your daily activity, contemplate on the scripture(s) you just studied. Let them stay abreast in your heart. Keep pondering over them.
This is what happens when you do so, light that is understanding begins to flood your heart.
God begins to speak to your heart and when His Word hits you the power of the word is activated!
Don't end the process at study, meditate too!
3. Obey The Word
" ...that thou mayest observe to do according to all that is written therein..
" – Joshua 1:8
Here's where 80-90% of believers miss it. They study the Word, Meditate on the Word but they do not obey the Word.
Obedience to the Word of God is what prompts the activation of the power of the Word of God.
This Bible which was written over 2000 years ago is still very alive and potent in its working. Our laziness has stopped us from the realization of the power of the Word.
"If ye be willing and obedient, ye shall eat the good of the land:" – Isaiah 1:19
The power of God's word can be activated when we obey the dictates of the word.
The process is simple.
Study The Word. Meditate on the Word. Obey the Word!
